Overview

St Joseph ’s College Melbourne provides Catholic education for boys in the tradition of Blessed Edmund Rice. We strive to nurture the ongoing development of a faith and learning community in which all members work towards becoming life long learners. Our curriculum is attentive to the needs of the individual, encouraging all to work to the best of their ability, by aiming to provide authentic, relevant and dynamic learning opportunities.

Through their studies, students are invited to explore their own sense of what learning is about by accepting and expressing a high level of self-discipline and seriousness as they engage in their programs of study.

A thoughtful respect for independent learning, the importance of exercising the mind and a respect for the rights of other learners are key elements for a successful approach by the individual student to his learning.

The staff of the College is very aware that for students to be fully engaged in their learning, a unique environment for learning needs to be created and maintained.

This environment

  • Has the learner as its centre
  • Is collaboratively organised, involving staff, students and parents
  • Is based on authentic and rich tasks and outcomes
  • Is flexible enough to address student needs and interests
  • Is ethically aware
  • Is community oriented
  • Challenges and supports all members of the College community to develop self worth and abilities
  • Is innovative and creative
  • Encourages life long learning
  • Is diverse and comprehensive
  • Integrates awareness and knowledge of Australian Indigenous cultures
  • Embraces teaching practices suited to the learning styles of boys

As such, programs of study from Years’ 7 to 12 are designed to cater for individual needs and pathways. The Vertical Curriculum on the Junior Campus allows students to select courses of study to maximise interests and strengths, whilst the Senior Campus offers many pathways in the VCE, VCAL, AsbA’s , VET or TAFE sector, or through involvement in the EDGE program.
